I played a video game and used spanish dialogue for the story mode.  The game was Dragonball Xenoverse. I read the story mode of the game in Spanish. This is my tenth community practice.

This is a very beautiful poem about a man's love for another woman. He says he loves the way she sneezes and the way she touches her hair. He writes that she is his life and history. He also writes that he gets filled up with so much love that he's afraid there isn't enough room for it. I really liked reading this poem and I feel that it is especially beautiful written in Spanish.

I downloaded and played Spanish checkers to see the difference between that and English checkers I didn't"t really find much difference.

I learned that "fuerza" is "force" and "enfrentarse" means "to face". "desarollar" means "to develop". "aunque" means "although". "desaparecidos" means "missing". "desmovilizacion" means "demobilization". We talked about how the US was supporting the government forces, but I didn't know that the Soviet Union was supporting the liberation front.

I learned "dirigir" means "to direct" and "transcurrir" means "to elapse". I learned that the movie was Mexican even though it is about El Salvador. I learned that "abordar" means "to address" and "ejercito" means "army." Also, I learned that "debido" means "because". I had to look some of these up because their meanings weren't evident in the context.

His parents talk about his childhood for a while, his brother and childhood friends do the same. They show the fields he played on as a kid. An FC Barcelona scout talks about his experience going to Argentina to see Messi play. He talks about how he was doubtful beforehand but knew he needed to sign him within minutes of watching him play.

This was hard to watch. You can see the pain on the faces of the people being interviewed which is brought on by the violence of this city.

In this video, they speak very rapid Spanish and it is tricky to follow. They spend a lot of time in an art museum which displays contemporary Argentine art. Then they spend time in a small Argentine restaurant and explain the local food. Last, they go to a large library with a lot of people. This library has really cool architecture. I was able to pick out and understand some phrases, but it is a lot more difficult to understand spoken Spanish than it is written Spanish.

I learned that "físico" means "physicist". I learned that "adolescencia" means "adolescence". I learned "emigrar" means "to migrate". I learned "egresar" means "to graduate" and "bachiller" means "bachelor".

Most of these words were evident through context.

I learned that "comenzará" is a future tense of "comenzar" which means "to start". I learned that "estbalecar" means "to establish". I learned that "abajo" means "below" and that "jamás" means "never". Also, I learned that "ventaja" means "advantage". Lastly I learned that "cuarto" means "fourth". I was able to figure most of this out through context.

The first time I watched and listen to the video to see if I could understand anything. The second time I listened and read the words in english on a lyrics translate. I then watched again one more time in just spanish to se if the music video and the song now made more sense.

For my next community practice I ordered my food in spanish on the way home from class Wednesday. I was on my way home and stopped at a Dunkin Doughnuts. I noticed the woman before my ordering in spanish and that the cashier could speak it well. I asked her if I could try with her. I ordered a coffee and a sandwhich. It was very difficult but she was nice and helped me with pronuncing words if I had to look them up on my phone. Luckily there was no one in line behind me.

Recently I had to go to the bank to take some money out of my account.  So I used my banks ATM machine and set the language to Spanish. Everything went smoothly there was no confusion at all as to whether or not I was taking out the right amount of money.

This past weekend a few of my friends and I took a trip up to Albany New York to visit a friend of ours from high school who is currently living there and holding a full time job. Well on our ride up I programmed my GPS so my navigation guide was in Spanish. My friends weren't too happy that they had to listen to a GPS shouting out directions in Spanish the whole ride to NY but they got over it.

My mom and sister both work at a mexiacan restaurant and every year on cinco de mayo they have a special celebration that my whole family goes to. There are a bunch of specials going on at the restaurant that day along with a mariachi band and a big raffle. For about 30 minutes I listened to Spanish music including Romeo Santos, Mark Anthony and Prince Royce. I understood the words for the most part and got the message the song was conveying. When I listen to Spanish music I find that it is a great way to practice my listening skills ad vocabulary because I hear words that I often forget about, so it kind of refreshes my memory. The one song title I remember listening to was Odio by Romeo Santos but I listen to about 7 other songs I just can't remember the names.

on 3/11/15 I was able to watch a eposoide of telemundo called, Open Eyes. During this episode Renato tells Anastasia that their friend Conrad does not deserve her. This is a series so at first it was a little hard to figure out what was happening, but in the middle of the show I started to understand the plot.

On 4/7/15 I went to the salon to get my hair dyed, I go to a Spanish/Brazilian salon in Hartford. While I was getting my hair done me and my stylist had short conversations in Spanish. (they barely know English) we talked about that we were hungry, and where she was from. sometimes it was a little hard to understand her because she talked fast.

For this community practice I read a poem in spanish and tried to translate on my own as much as 
I could by looking at the key words I have learned. After reading it over a few times I translated the poem into English online to see if I had translated correctly. I then found that poem is about love and the the poet proclaims he can't stop thinking about his beloved - her hair, her eyes, her look. Basically it is about how he cannot stop loving her.

Last year, I made a Spanish book called

La Jirafa que Queria Volar

and this is the script. (I let my cousin borrow my actual book)

 

Hubo una jirafa llamado Jorge.  Como todas las jirafas, que tenía un cuello muy largo.  Se le ayudó a conseguir el fruto del árbol alto.

 

Por lo general se quedó con todos sus amigos y familia.  Tenían el desayuno y la cena juntos, jugaban juntos, y sólo salía con uno al otro.

 

Un día, Jorge quería ir en un pequeño paseo a solas.  Nunca lo general es por sí mismo, pero se enfermó de constantemente estar cerca a otros.

 

Durante su paseo, se topó con bares, y los tigres, e incluso un zorro.  “Wow hay tantos animales diferentes,” dijo.  El siquió caminando, haciendo caso omiso de los estados recibiendo.  “¿Qué estás?”  Jorge había estado recibiendo esta pregunta todo el día, pero siguió su camino alegre.

 

Jorge había entrado en un campo mirando hacia fuera en la distancía.  Se veía muy lejos y se dio cuenta de calgo en el aire.

 

Ser curioso, se acercó a lo extraño y le preguntó “¿Qué eres?”  Ellos respondieron “Somos aves!”  Jorge se sorprendió porque él nunca vio nado vuela antes.  Jorge quería volar.

 

“¿Cómo así que eso es?”  Jorge pidió a los pájaros.  “Acabamos de solapa nuestras alas y estábamos en nuestro camino,” respondio a los pájaros.  Jorge volvió a su colonia par di cirler a sus amigos y familiares lo que había descubierto.

 

Explicó las aves y su vuelo en profundidad.  “Tal vez yo puedo volar!”  Jorge exclamó.  “Eso no parece una buena idea, tal hijo,” dijo su padre a él.

 

Pero Jorge no escuchó y él saltó, trate de mover las piernas de tal manera, y cayó.  Se cansa una y otra vez y finalmente se rindió.  Decepcionado, Jorge se fue en otro paseó y puso mala cara.

 

Todo lo que le pone mala cara tiene hambre, por lo que se detuvo y se puso un poco de fruta de un árbol alto.  “Wow, ¿como se hace eso?” preguntó el oso.

 

Jorge se dio cuenta de que a pesar de que no podía volar, no todo el mundo puede llegar a lugares altos colo él puede.  Sintió contenido.

I tend to listen to a lot of Spanish music; I even have some on my iPod.  Like you mentioned in one of our lessons, Juanes is one of the artists I listen to.  His popular song, Tengo La Camisa Negra, which means I Have a Black Shirt.  Without looking up the translation, there are many words that I do not recognize, but I do know a few, like amor meaning my love, or alma meaning soul, cama meaning bed, and simple words like that I know.  Some words I do not know are disimulo, señas, or mentira, etc. I did notice in the song that a lot of the words rhymed.

Also when it came to listening to Spanish music, I have the radio station 98.5 set on it because it’s all Spanish, and it’s great!

For a while now, I have and will have my phone’s language set as Spanish.  This helps me learn some Spanish since I know what a lot of the things on my phone already are.  Many of my apps all turned Spanish, the weather is written all in Spanish and with pictures next to it, and it was pretty easy to learn the words.

Examples are: soleado – sunny

                        parcialmente nublado – partly cloudy

                        mayormente soleado – mostly sunny

                        chubasco matinales – scattered showers

                        despejado – clear

Another fun thing about turning my phone into Spanish is the weather is in Celsius, and it’s just different to see it compared to Fahrenheit.  Having the calendar in Spanish helps me learn the months, notifications I may get on Facebook are in Spanish and since I click on it and figure out what it is, I can learn many different words and sentences.

I work at Dunkin Donuts and I usually talk to the baker when he comes in, and he is of Ecuadorian descent, name Oswaldo.  I asked him if he would help me with my Spanish class by helping me with works, conversing with me, whatever!  “Martyna, estás loca.”  He always calls me crazy, and he also tells me what he is doing when he is doing it.  He likes to be a pain, but it does help me learn.  “Voy al baño,” “Voy a hacer buñuelos ahora,” etc.  A lot of the time, I ask him what he is saying after he says it, and he is more than happy to help me, he wants me to be fluent so that he would have someone there at work to talk crap to. :P

I decided to put on the Spanish channel on my TV, and there happened to be a novela on, and to my knowledge, that is what I have been told was a soap opera.  It is called Señora Acero, and the woman just killed a man, then security has come out, and she said “Tranquillos,” and that seemed to be like “calm down.”  I heard things like  muerde, que paso, aqui, las cosas, un solo royal mas, etc.; they all talk very fast.  Then there were commercials that I remember on English TV and it’s in Spanish, so I can figure out what they mean.  Me encanta was said when a girl loved how her hair looked, deportes, canales, meaning sports and channels, gratis meaning free, etc.  Vamos was said to the girl so they would leave in the show away from the crime scene; it also helps seeing the show and what is going on so you can put two and two together as to what the words mean and what they are doing.  The girl was telling her son when he will be getting out of the hospital and she said junio.

This past week I tried to build upon my speaking with coworkers in Spanish that I had done the week before for community practice. I aimed to continue stating the numbers in Spanish but also state some of the more simple commands as well. Some of the more frequent commands I used were mira, ven aca, and ayuadame. These are phrases I constantly use in the office but instead tried to speak them in Spanish to enforce their meaning. I did find myself looking a lot of things up but after doing so a few times I began to remember the phrases on my own and I believe they will stick with me.

For my second community practice I decided to try to speak with my coworkers in Spanish over the week of our Spring Break. I work in an office with many Spanish speakers. It is also attached to a factory where 90% of the employees speak Spanish as their native language. I knew I wouldn't be able to keep up with a full conversation so I decided to start small. Our orders are identified by 6 digit numbers so I tried to always refer to the order number in Spanish. I also tried to say the number in double digits so it would be more of a challenge. For example, if the number was 812745 I would say it as ochenta y dos, veintisieta, cuarenta y cinco.

For this community practice, I read a poem by one of the greatest Spanish poets of the twentieth century. Jorge Guillén was born January 18th, 1893, in Old Castile, Spain.

This poem is basically about the summers experienced by youth. Summers are slow and they seem to be eternal. Like the mountains and the sea, summer is everlasting. The poet's theme of the poem seems to be time and how it seems to go slowly and encompasses everything. My favorite line of the poem is "Con monte y mar, con horas tersas" which translates to "With mountain and sea, with smooth hour." That line sounds so good and it really captures the essence of the poem.

For this community practice, I read an article from a newspaper based in Spain. The name of the newspaper is El Periódico. The newspaper is written in Spanish and Catalan. The article talked about the recent crash of a German aircraft. The writer of the article says that the low cost of the airlines does not affect the security of the flights. Actually, low cost airlines have the same security measures as regular airlines. This article also says that low cost airlines are growing in Spain. Although the airlines meet requirements, the writer says that pilots are trying to improve and go beyond the requirements to make air travel safer.

I based this one off of what I did in the kitchen, I would flip the cards over and attempt to say the name of each item without looking at it. After saying what I thought the correct word was I would check the note card and then flip it back over if it was not correct.

I did this several times trying to memorize what each item was to the best of my ability.

Practica de comunidad 9

Today I attended the Native American/Latino opening for the movie Rock n Roll 68. I went at 5 and left by 615. I listened to a band that played Spanish music and a speaker that spoke a little bit in Spanish. I had Peruvian food (rice&chicken, empandas&beef (I think),vegetables and potatoes in a cheesy sauce). Unfortunately I did have to leave because I thought the move would be starting at an early time instead of an hour an a half after the event had began. But I still immersed myself in the Spanish culture and met a lot of Spanish speaking people. :)

Adventures at IHOP

I went out to IHOP with my best friend and I decided that I could at least try to do a community practice. I ordered tortilla de filete y un pila panqueques. The waitress actually understood me. Not because she actually spoke Spanish but because she would get Spanish speaking customers often and had to learn the basic items on the menu in Spanish.

Today I attended the first medical Spanish meeting. It was a little bit over an hour and a half that I got to listen to native speakers, a few professors, a guest speaker (dentist) and got to speak myself. This is something that I will be committed to every week and may even consider being treasurer. I think that this will give me great opportunities to learn new vocabulary and be comfortable speaking basic "medical" talk. We will practice skits in this club, volunteer and interact in the Hispanic community, watch movies and go out to eat. Those are very few of the beginning ideas but i'm sure it will progress over time. Overall I am happy that I attended :)

I read the article below on elpais.com because I found it an easier read than the others. What I understand is that a 30 year old woman (mother) died during aesthetic treatment of silicon in the legs and butt. HEr name Angela Velasco and paid $800.000  resulting in a allergic reaction and lots of complications. There are no none suspects and a lot of people are infuriated. They believe the suspect may be a transsexual that works in a barber shop and is a fraud not a real plastic surgeon.

 Esta persona, un transexual, empleado de la peluquería, había sido detenida en  su sitio de trabajo en Jamundí por miembros de la Sijín de la Policía, en cumplimiento de una orden de captura expedida por un Juez de Control de Garantías, por el delito de homicidio con dolo eventual.

Según la investigación de la Sijín, en enero del año pasado, la joven, oriunda de Villarrica, había acudido a Jamundí a contactar a un estilista conocido como ‘Sombra’ para aplicarse biopolímeros en los glúteos y las  piernas.  La intervención fue realizada en la vivienda de la joven. Sin embargo, Ángela María sufrió complicaciones y fue trasladada   al  Hospital Universitario del Valle, donde murió.

De acuerdo con fuentes de la Sijín, en la investigación se reunieron los informes de Medicina Legal y del hospital, también entrevistas de personas que contaban cómo la mujer había contactado a ‘Sombra’, a quien le pagó $800.000 por la intervención.

 En uno de los dictámenes se indicó que la sustancia aplicada le llegó al torrente sanguíneo y de allí a los pulmones, por lo que la joven broncoaspiró.

En esa ocasión, el médico del HUV Darío Salazar explicó que la muerte de la mujer fue producto de una obstrucción de las vías respiratorias causada por la sustancia inyectada.

Ángela María, de  30 años, tenía una hija de 11 años, y  trabajaba en un estanco que tenía al frente del parque de Villa Rica.

Las autoridades también revelaron que en el 2012 otro paciente, al parecer, a quien el peluquero le aplicó biopolímeros falleció. “Se encuentra siendo investigado por otro hecho similar de marzo del 2012. Se trata de Jhonny Fernando Mosquera, quien perdió la vida luego de  un procedimiento estético. En este caso tenemos hasta el  recibo de consignación a nombre de ‘Sombra’ por $600.000”, explicó el investigador de la Sijín.

Con estos elementos, una fiscal de Jamundí solicitó la captura el 23 de febrero pasado y esta se hizo efectiva el 27 de ese mes. Sin embargo, la funcionaria fue traslada a Cali y su reemplazo acudió a las audiencias preliminares.

En la audiencia, el juez legalizó la captura. Luego, el fiscal  anunció que no imputaría cargos ni solicitaría medida de aseguramiento, pues  no se tenían los elementos suficientes con motivos fundados para establecer el dolo eventual.

Por esa razón, ‘Sombra’ quedó en libertad al finalizar la audiencia.

Frente a esa decisión, el exfiscal y abogado Élmer Montaña, reflexionó sobre los peligros de las llamadas clínicas de garaje.  “En los casos de las personas que asumen el riesgo de manera voluntaria de aplicarle a otras sustancias en su organismo, a sabiendas de las consecuencias que se pueden derivar en contra de la salud o la vida de la persona, y sin tener los conocimientos médicos, dejando todo al azar, estarían incurriendo en un dolo eventual. A mi manera de ver,  el fiscal tenía los elementos suficientes para haberle imputado el homicidio con dolo eventual”.

 “Esa laxitud de la Fiscalía frente a estas personas que lesionan o matan a otras aplicándoles sustancias en el organismo es lo que ha permitido la proliferación de este tipo de actividades estéticas sin control y con un grave peligro para la comunidad”, agregó.

For this community report, I read the Spanish Wikipedia article on Felix Hernandez, pitcher for the Seattle Mariners. I learned that "lanzador" means "pitcher" and "lanzar" means "to pitch". I learned that "lograr" means "to achieve", "proeza" means "feat", "viste una camiseta de manga larga": "long sleeved t-shirt", "derecha": "left". I learned that "carreras" literally means "races" but is how runs are referred to in baseball. I learned that "ponches" means "punches" but is how strikeouts are referred to. I learned that he is Venezuelan and the first Venezuelan to throw a perfect game in MLB. I was able to understand most of what I read and inferred the meaning of some of these words through context.

Costa Rica activa las alertas por las erupciones del volcan Turrialba

4 erupciones del volcán Turrialba cerca la cuidad de San Jose en Costa Rica y tuvo que cerrar el auropuerto porque de nubes gris. No visibilidad en el calle de la cuidad y los personas tuvieron que usar mascarillas. Esta volcan es uno de mas activa en Costa Rica pero no ha habido uno este intenso desde 1996.

This article was a easy read but I did have to Google translate a few words to connect some sentences. I like reading short articles like this one because I feel that it increases my vocab little by little and I learn about Spanish news.

Community Practice 4

Para la práctica de mi comunidad me decidí a completar algunas de mi entrenamiento en español. El audio estaba en inglés aunque las leyendas y las preguntas al final fueron todos en espanol. En total, veo tres videos en español que eran casi 30 minutos cada uno. Las preguntas eran la parte difícil de cambiar el título a espanol, tomó mucho tiempo para tratar de comprender lo que fue dicho y luego escoger la respuesta correcta.

For this community practice, I read some of the Spanish Wikipedia article on Paco de Lucia. I learned that "fue" is a past tense form of "ser". I learned that "como" can mean "with" in certain contexts. I learned that "ambiente" means "environment". I learned that "cercano" means "close". "Grabar" means "to record". "Concurso" means "contest". I was able to understand, for the most part, the first couple paragraphs. I looked these words up to make sure that I guessed them correctly. Paco was an outstanding Spanish guitar player by the way.

Para mi tercera práctica de la comunidad he visto una serie de vídeos de la revista Que hora es? UNA telenovela mexicana de moda para la gente que tenía 3 semanas de español. Tres vídeos que he visto a la espera de mi clase para comenzar. He encontrado los videos graciosos que van más allá porque los actores se habla español, pero lo que decían no tenía coordinación. Lo que también hizo los videos divertido fue que 4 personas hablaban español, pero no tan fluido como un chico mexicano que venga a decir algunas cosas y todos se van "Que? "

For this activity, I had conversations with my mom and boyfriend in Spanish through text message. My boyfriend and mom are both fluent in Spanish. It was fun to text them both in Spanish since I am Spanish myself. It's much easier to have a conversation with people who are fluent because you can use their texts to help respond. Also, it was fun way to learn new vocabulary in Spanish. I learned some new words like "aguila" and "menta" through a fun and silly conversation. Here are the text messages!

For my fifth community practice I listed what items I had in my kitchen.
Sink, cupboards, and refrigerator, strainer, toaster, cheese grader, cutting board, knives, forks, pots and pans, microwave, cups, and soap and a dishwasher.
Here is the list in Spanish
Fregadero, armarios y nevera, colador, tostadora, queso grado, la tabla de cortar, cuchillos, tenedores, ollas y sartenes, microondas, vasos y jabón y un lavavajillas.

After listing them I placed a number on each item and tried to match which number went with the correct word.

At my work place I greeted spanish speaking customers saying, hola como esta. Majority would reply bien y tu and I would reply mi bien. Also following wednesdays class I conversed with one of my customers saying what I have more of (mas) and what I have less of (memos).

Esta manana vi Despierta America en el canal espanol. No podria deguir todo pero reconoci un monton de palabras. No ha registrado las palabras porque era multitarea pero peudo recordar los temas como Kim Kardashian y una mujer que dio a luz murio durante 40 minutos y volio a la vida. Sobre todo me guta Despierta America mucho y yo sere verla de nuevo.

For my 4th community practice I looked up the ingredients on how  to make chocolate chip cookies with the ingredients in Spanish
300 g de harina
 150 g de azúcar
 100 g de mantequilla y un poquito más para engrasar el molde
 1 vaso de leche
 100 g de cacao
 1 pizca de sal
 1 sobrecito de levadura

 Pasos para el Bizcocho de chocolate:
 Paso 1: Precalentar el horno.
 Paso 2: En un cuenco grande mezclar todos los ingredientes, empezando por la harina, los huevos y la mantequilla.
 Paso 3: Engrasar un molde de bizcocho con un poquito de mantequilla y verter la mezcla.
 Paso 4: Cocer a horno medio durante 30 minutos. Sacar y dejar enfriar.
 Paso 5 (optativo): Una vez frío y desmoldado, se puede cortar horizontalmente y untar con chocolate derretido.

Translated to
300 g flour
150 g sugar

  Steps for chocolate cake:
  Step 1: Preheat the oven.

My second community practice was over the weekend when I was at pizza heaven 2. The two cooks who work at Pizza Heaven 2 are both from Mexico. Every time I visit I could never understand what the cooks were saying when they decided to speak in Spanish. Now that I have a little understanding of some of the basics, there were a few words that caught my attention.  Como estas , cual es su nombre and Que hora es,  Soy de Cancun, Tengo treinta y cuatro años de edad, y Tengo dos hijos. I know that this is not a lot compared to others, but because of how fast they were talking I thought that getting those three words out of their brief conversation was good.

Instrucciones

Precaliente el horno a 350 grados F.Corte la mantequilla en trozos uno pulgadas y poner en un tazón batidora de pie. El uso de la paleta y en baja velocidad, mezclar la mantequilla durante un minuto para ablandar. Con la batidora en marcha, añada el azúcar y continuar a velocidad baja hasta que se incorpore el azúcar. Aumentar la velocidad a media-alta y batir la mezcla hasta que esté suave y cremosa. Detener el mezclador y raspar los lados y el fondo del tazón con una espátula de goma para asegurarse de que toda la mantequilla se incorpore plenamente.Añadir la mantequilla de maní y el extracto de vainilla y mezclar a velocidad baja hasta que la mezcla se vuelve suave.Añadir los huevos uno a la vez, a la espera hasta que el primero es absorbida antes de añadir el siguiente. Una vez añadidos los dos huevos y la mezcla es lisa, parar la máquina y raspar el bol.Agregue los ingredientes secos a la vez y mezclar a velocidad baja hasta que la harina se incorpora casi.Detener el mezclador y agregue los cacahuetes. Devuelva la mesa de mezclas a baja y mezclar hasta que se distribuyen de manera uniforme en toda la masa.Usando una cuchara, deje caer la masa de galletas en un pergamino o bandeja para hornear forrada silpat, alrededor de una pulgada de distancia.Enfriar la masa durante 10 minutos, luego antes de hornear, espolvorear las tapas de las galletas con el azúcar granulada y marcar con un patrón de Criss Cross con un tenedor.Hornear durante unos 12 minutos, girando la sartén la mitad del tiempo de cocción. Las cookies tienen que ser de oro la luz en el exterior y suave en el interior.
