Community Practice #3

Feb 27, 2015

For this activity, I had conversations with my mom and boyfriend in Spanish through text message. My boyfriend and mom are both fluent in Spanish. It was fun to text them both in Spanish since I am Spanish myself. It's much easier to have a conversation with people who are fluent because you can use their texts to help respond. Also, it was fun way to learn new vocabulary in Spanish. I learned some new words like "aguila" and "menta" through a fun and silly conversation. Here are the text messages!

For my fifth community practice I listed what items I had in my kitchen.
Sink, cupboards, and refrigerator, strainer, toaster, cheese grader, cutting board, knives, forks, pots and pans, microwave, cups, and soap and a dishwasher.
Here is the list in Spanish
Fregadero, armarios y nevera, colador, tostadora, queso grado, la tabla de cortar, cuchillos, tenedores, ollas y sartenes, microondas, vasos y jabón y un lavavajillas.

After listing them I placed a number on each item and tried to match which number went with the correct word.

At my work place I greeted spanish speaking customers saying, hola como esta. Majority would reply bien y tu and I would reply mi bien. Also following wednesdays class I conversed with one of my customers saying what I have more of (mas) and what I have less of (memos).

My second community practice was over the weekend when I was at pizza heaven 2. The two cooks who work at Pizza Heaven 2 are both from Mexico. Every time I visit I could never understand what the cooks were saying when they decided to speak in Spanish. Now that I have a little understanding of some of the basics, there were a few words that caught my attention.  Como estas , cual es su nombre and Que hora es,  Soy de Cancun, Tengo treinta y cuatro años de edad, y Tengo dos hijos. I know that this is not a lot compared to others, but because of how fast they were talking I thought that getting those three words out of their brief conversation was good.

self-checkout (5)

The other day, I went to BJ’s and used the self-checkout lane, and then I set it to Spanish.  There were options such as dinero en efectivo, crédito, exploración, producto, fruto, cobrar, terminar y pagar, and necesita ayuda.  Since I have done this self-checkout before at BJ’s, I knew what everything was because of the location of the buttons.  I used only the dinero button because I almost always pay in cash.  Before I did that and after I scanned everything, I chose the terminar y pagar option.

my car is spanish (4)

I decided to pick up my car manual and flip to a random page, and it landed on the different gears. I checked the English section and saw that it pretty much meant when to use second gear and what happens when you use it.

pancakes! (3)

I decided to watch a video in Spanish on YouTube about making pancakes.  The guy seems to be making the video for a Spanish class himself.  He listed ingredients and what he was doing step by step all in Spanish as he was doing it.  He listed things like mezcla para panqueques, juevos, leche, chispas de chocolate, etc.  Other words he used were tazas, mezclan, tirón, estufa, and a fuego medio.  I learned how to make pancakes and say it in Spanish, so then I made them the following day.

cookies! (2)

The other day, I was bored and wanted to make cookies.  I put the recipe in Spanish on my tablet and that was kind of difficult to follow, but I kept using google translate to guide me through it.  I didn’t want to poison myself.  I learned measurements and other words such as cups, teaspoons, eggs, shortening, ingredients, apple, tablespoon, baking sheet, etc.  These words are tazas, cucharillas, huevos, manteca, ingredientes (really easy), manzana, cuchara de sopa, and una bandeja para hornear.  I’m not sure if that is the correct translation for each.  After looking up what everything was, I wrote the whole recipe down in English and made the cookies, and I didn’t die!

Comm Practice #2

For this community practice, I started watching the movie "Maria Full of Grace". It is about a Columbian girl named Maria who gets involved in a drug trade in order to make money. She had recently quit her job because she didn't like how she was treated. Also, she recently found out she is pregnant. So far, the movie is good and very suspenseful. Seeing how people are used for drug mules in real life everyday, it made the movie feel very real and you are more aware of the drug problems plaguing Spanish countries. Throughout the movie, you see Maria's everyday life in Columbia. The way they live and the way we live in America are polar opposites. Maria had a very poor paying job while living under the same roof with many family members.

I'm watching the movie with English subtitles and I'm surprised that I am catching most of what they're saying without reading the captions. The Spanish they're speaking is very clear and close to the Spanish I hear everyday.

Practica de comunidad 1

community practice #1

As a part time job I work as a waiter at a seafood restaurant on the shoreline of Westbrook  CT called Lenny and Joes Fishtale. I began working there as a buss boy when I turned sixteen seven years ago. Throughout the years I have become very close with the entire staff, including the spanish speaking employees that work there. I have learned a lot about them and their culture as well as teaching them whatever I can about ours because they are just as eager to learn about our culture as we are to learn about theirs. Every time I go into work I learn something new by talking to them in their language and conversing with them. When I get stuck and don't know how to say a word or phrase in spanish they help me out until I find what I am trying to say. And I do the same for them.
Hey everyone I am going to be making a pinterest board on spanish culture from all cspanish speaking countries. You can follow me on pinterest the board is called SCSU Spanish 101
Community practice

Yarelis - Comm Practice #1

2/5/15

My activity was listening/watching spanish music videos on Youtube. Here are some of the ones I watched: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-befR4wHsjQ
                https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NUsoVlDFqZg
                https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UZ_v2QIJrmk

The first one I watched was Shakira's song for the 2014 World Cup. Without looking up lyrics, I could only pick out some of the words. She mentions all the different countries playing in the World Cup and the different colors, "el pais y todo los colores." She names countries like Brasil, Colombia, America, and Italia. Another video I watched is Enrique Iglesias "Bailando." Assuming it is about dancing by the title, I tried to understand as much as I could without googling. The gist of it is that he wants to dance with this woman that he thinks is pretty.
